Description
PATINATED BRONZE OKIMONO OF A STANDING ROOSTER
Japan, circa late 19th century
Unsigned
9 1/2" H x 3 1/4" D x 5" W
This bronze okimono depicts a rooster standing alert with chest forward and tail feathers rising in a dense vertical sweep. The modeling emphasizes the contrast between broad, layered plumage and the sharper articulation of the comb, wattles and claws. Surface treatment is notable in the wings and tail, where the chiseled feather-work creates a strong sense of texture. He stands on a single foot while the other is drawn in, the model balancing on the wings and single foot. Compact in scale but visually assertive, the work reflects the Meiji period preference for closely observed animal subjects rendered with both decorative clarity and technical control.
Condition: Minor wear to the original patina. Minute bending to feather tips with associated scuffing. Cracks at the joint of the toes, likely from an old drop, remain intact but visibly separated. Cleaned and sealed in conservator’s wax. Presents very well.
