Description
This pretty little vase has a beautifully layered, high-fired glaze in deep teal blue with subtle tonal variation, characteristic of mid-century Kähler ceramics. The surface shifts from saturated gloss to a dry, iron-rich break at the shoulder, revealing the warmth of the natural clay beneath. Incised wave motifs catch and deepen the glaze, creating movement and depth, while a fine, natural crazing adds a soft, time-earned patina. I love these pieces and their elegant study in contrast, where an intense glaze meets the raw, volcanic clay so distinctive in it's control and spontaneity, hallmarks of the Kähler workshop at its best.
Herman A. Kähler (1870–1940) was a second-generation leader of the Kähler ceramics workshop, founded by his father in 1839 in Næstved, Denmark. Under his direction, the firm gained international recognition, known for its collaborations with leading artists and its intensely colored distinctive glazes. His leadership established Kähler as a defining force in Danish ceramic design in the early 20th century. -
