Description
Large pair of Sèvres-style porcelain vases with Napoleonic scenes
French, Late 19th Century
Height 123cm, diameter 40cm
Standing at over a metre in height, these impressive baluster form vases are painted with scenes of Napoleonic victory.
The vases are notable for the deep green ground that adorns the neck and foot – unusual for such Sèvres-style objects. The green is complemented by superb parcel gilt decoration, which includes large ‘N’ initials (for Napoleon) surrounded by gilded cartouches. Other gilt elements include reserving medallions of eagles, as well as anthemions and scrolling borders. Both the necks and feet are splayed, and each vase is topped by a domed lid with a pinecone finial.
The main body of each vase is adorned with a continuous painted frieze. Each composition shows Napoleon in battle, riding atop his horse as he deftly leads his men. The scenes are superbly rendered with painterly skill, paying great attention to the handling of light and detail. The friezes are signed ‘MAGLIN’ to the lower edge.
The underside of each vase is marked ‘M. Imple de Sevres’. The vases sit on square ormolu plinths, which are each supported by four paw feet.
These superb items of Napoleonic porcelainware would be a magnificent addition to the appropriate interior space.
