This striking watercolour depicts an Arab warrior, shown full-length and in profile against a sunlit landscape. It is a fine example of the Orientalist genre that flourished across Europe in the second half of the 19th century, as artists travelled through North Africa and the Near East and brought back studies of its people, dress and light. The work is by the German-born painter Carl Haag (German, 1820–1915), one of the leading watercolourists of the Victorian age, and is dated 1861 — the period immediately following his celebrated journeys through Egypt, Sinai and Syria.
The warrior stands at ease upon a dusty path, his weight resting on one leg as he gazes into the distance. He wears a rose-pink robe of fine silk, its front finely embroidered with braided trim and gathered at the waist by a worked belt. Rose and salmon-pink silks of this kind, imported and costly, were prized across the Ottoman and North African world as a mark of rank and means, and Haag lavishes particular care on the play of light across the fabric, contrasting its sheen against the coarser wool worn over it. Beneath the robe are loose white breeches and soft tan leather boots bound at the ankle. A cream woollen burnous, the hooded cloak characteristic of the Maghreb, is draped across his shoulders, its heavy folds falling to the ground.
His head is wrapped in a white turban wound over a red cap, or fez, finished with a red and blue tassel. This layering of turban over fez was typical of the Ottoman provinces, where the cap denoted status and the wound cloth was arranged according to region and rank. The combination, together with the silk robe and the burnous, suggests a man of some standing, most likely a figure from the Ottoman-governed lands of North Africa or the Levant, rather than a common soldier. In his raised right hand he holds a slender staff or ramrod, while a long-barrelled gun of the Eastern type stands upright against him, its stock resting on the ground. A curved jambiya dagger and a gourd powder flask hang at his side, suspended from cords across his chest.
The figure is set within a carefully observed landscape. To the left rise rocks, a whitewashed building and a windblown palm, while beyond the warrior a distant town shimmers in pale blue and gold. At the right, two further figures, one robed and mounted, the other walking alongside, recede toward the horizon, lending depth and narrative to the composition.
Haag handles the medium with great control, combining transparent washes with passages of bodycolour to render the sheen of silk, the weight of wool and the heat of the surrounding air. The result is a portrait of considerable presence, typical of the artist's ability to unite ethnographic precision with a Romantic sense of place.
The painting is monogrammed and dated 'C H 1861' at the lower right. The reverse retains a handwritten biographical note recording the artist's training under Reindel at Nuremberg and Cornelius at Munich, his travels through Belgium, France, Italy, Egypt and Syria, his membership of the Society of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Society of British Artists, his appointment as painter to the court of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and his award of the Légion d'honneur in 1878.
