Matt Wedel, Purple Pony, 2010
Large-scale glazed ceramic sculpture by Matt Wedel, titled Purple Pony, 2010.
Executed in a rich purple glaze, the work presents a monumental yet playful equine form with simplified anatomy, softly modeled features, and a tactile, hand-worked surface. At nearly 40 inches high and 40 inches deep, the sculpture has a commanding physical presence while retaining an appealing sense of directness and humor.
Dimensions: 39½ h × 15¼ w × 40 d in
100 × 39 × 102 cm
Condition: Good condition. Surfaces exhibit an even distribution of burst glaze bubbles and faint crazing throughout, inherent to the making and firing process. The back of one front hoof shows a glaze chip measuring approximately ½ × ½ inch, not readily visible except upon close inspection.
About the Artist
Matt Wedel is an American ceramic sculptor known for ambitious, large-scale works that expand traditional notions of studio ceramics. His practice frequently incorporates animal, botanical, and figurative forms, combining hand modeling with expressive glazes and an emphasis on the physical qualities of clay and the unpredictability of the firing process. -
