Description
“Art Deco bronze sculpture ‘La Panthère’ by Maurice Prost, executed circa 1930. The stylized panther, in mid-stride, is cast in patinated bronze and set atop a sleek Belgian black marble base. Signed by Prost and Susse Frères, this museum-quality piece epitomizes the marriage of elegant abstraction, animal power, and exquisite craftsmanship that defines both Prost’s work and the Art Deco movement.”
“La Panthère” stands as a powerful icon of 20th-century French sculpture—an ingenious synthesis of realistic form and modernist geometry.
Prost was part of the influential “animalier” tradition in French sculpture but set himself apart with a distinctly modern, stylized approach that embodied the streamlined beauty of the period; “La Panthère” was shown at prominent venues, including the Salon des Artistes Français and the 1931 Paris Colonial Exposition, and became one of Prost’s signature models. He received numerous honors during his career, including the Legion of Honor, and his work remains highly sought after in the art market. -
