Description
A nude female figure hurtles headlong through a band of stylised clouds, her outstretched body and streaming hair fusing into the incandescent tail of a comet. Conceived at the height of the Art Deco period, the sculpture distils the era’s passion for speed, aerodynamics and modernity into a single, sweeping gesture. First presented at the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs in Paris, La Comète has since become one of Guiraud‑Rivière’s most celebrated creations and an enduring icon of French Art Deco sculpture. An example was famously displayed in the lobby of New York’s Chrysler Building in the 1930s, underscoring the work’s close affinity with avant‑garde architecture and the machine age.
