Description
A large and highly sculptural ceramic floor vase by Timothy Persons, created in 1998. Executed in glazed and painted ceramic and preserved in very good vintage condition with minor surface wear consistent with age and artistic process, the work presents a refined yet expressive interpretation of postmodern studio ceramics, where architectural form and painterly surface coexist in a singular object.
The vase rises in a tall, columnar silhouette composed of stacked geometric volumes, lending it a totemic and architectural presence. Its surface is treated as a continuous visual field, animated by abstract markings, linear elements, symbolic motifs, and blocks of color in a palette of blues, blacks, whites, and vivid accents. The composition recalls painting translated into three dimensions, with each side offering a distinct yet related visual rhythm.
The slightly irregular rim emphasizes the hand-built nature of the piece and reflects a conscious departure from strict formalism in favor of expressive individuality.
Timothy Persons is a Norwegian-born, American-trained artist, curator, and educator. He studied ceramics under Paul Soldner and developed his early work within the experimental Southern California art scene. His practice in this period explored the intersection of ceramics and painting, aligning with broader developments in late twentieth-century studio craft. He later gained international recognition for his curatorial work and his role in shaping the Helsinki School.
This example belongs to a significant moment in the artist’s development, when ceramic form was approached as an architectonic and painterly medium. Monumental works from this period remain uncommon and capture a distinctive fusion of postmodern sensibility with expressive and architectural elements. The vase is signed Persons -98. A period when he produced vases for Arabia. - More Information
