Paavo Tynell Magician's Hat Pendant K2-14, White, Brass, & Opaline, Idman 1950s

A beautiful ceiling pendant, model K2-14, designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Affectionately nicknamed the “Magician’s Hat,” the lamp reflects the playful and poetic side of Tynell’s work.

The fixture combines a softly glowing opal glass diffuser with a white-painted metal shade, delicately perforated with star-shaped openings that allow points of light to shine through. The sculptural spring wire above the glass adds one of Tynell’s characteristic decorative details, bringing a sense of movement and whimsy to the otherwise simple and functional form.

With its balanced proportions and warm, atmospheric light, the K2-14 is remarkably versatile. It would work beautifully in a living room, bedroom, entrance hall or above a small dining table. Its playful character also makes it particularly charming for a child’s room, where it can quite literally bring a little magic to the interior.

The pendant remains in its original condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with age and use. It is stamped by the manufacturer.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers and is often described as the man who “illuminated Finland.” A trained metalsmith and co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918, he created lighting for numerous important public buildings, including the Finnish Parliament House and the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York.

Tynell’s distinctive combination of refined metalwork, poetic ornamentation and softly filtered light brought him international recognition, particularly through Finland House in New York. Today, his lamps rank among the most sought-after examples of twentieth-century Finnish design.
