Description
A gothic sallet, open-faced in the italian manner
c. 1475-1500
Flanders or Spain
Steel
Struck on the rear of the skull with two marks of Spanish form to either side of the ridge
#3718
PROVENANCE
Bashford Dean (inaugural curator of the armour collection
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
Sold by The American Art Association, New York, with an armour, lot 318, 18th-19th November 1921. Bought by French & Co. Gallery and subsequently sold to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (inv. no. 33-643)
A comparable Italian example, circa 1470-80, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 04.3.230.
The present sallet notably compares with another struck with the crowned orb mark attributed to Martin Rondelle, an Italian working as an armourer for the Bastard of Burgundy in Bruges in 1473; this example is mounted on armour A20 in The Wallace Collection, London. -
