Pair of Georgian Giltwood Candelabra
-
Description
Fine pair of George III carved and giltwood candelabra in the manner of Thomas Chippendale the Younger, the four candle sockets with ribbed sides, the central arm with corkscrew shaft having later drip pan, the three side lights with fire gilt brass arms with foliate and scroll decoration, the central urn with ribbing and fluted stem standing on later gadrooned socle plinth bases. England, circa 1780.
The ribbed brass candle sockets on this pair are identical to those on a pair of documented candelabra by Thomas Chippendale Jr. (illustrations 199 and 201 in Judith Goodison's "The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale Junior" Philip Wilson Publishers 2017). The carving of central urns and honeysuckle motif stems relates to several known examples by Chippendale Sr. and Jr. -
