Pair of Heavy Brass Belle Époque Three-Light Candelabra, Circa 1890
-
Description
This pair of Belle Époque, three-light, Baroque Revival candelabra are elaborately decorated with detailed leafy scrolls, stems, and blossoms on all surfaces. They are of superior quality, crisply cast, and heavy. These exuberant candelabra are both centered by a three-headed roaring lion over a ball-and-pillow segmented shaft, the base of which is anchored by a Classical female head on either side. Each of the actual candle receptacles is in three parts: (1) a squared foliage bobeche under (2) a round urn-shaped cup to accept thick candles, and (3) an inserted, removable adapter with a foliate lip, used for holding regular-sized candles. All parts are original to the pair. There is a natural patina from years of polishing and use, with matte low areas and shinier raised areas, providing contrast and definition. The overall look is rich, dramatic, and Old World.
