Description
A powerful and highly decorative pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases from the Meiji period (1868–1912), attributed to the accomplished enamel artist Honda Yasaburo, whose works are distinguished by their bold compositions and finely articulated dragon imagery.
Each vase is dominated by a large, animated dragon in sweeping motion across the body—masterfully rendered with intricate scale work, expressive heads, curling whiskers, and sharply defined claws. The precision of the cloisonné wirework, combined with expertly controlled enamel shading, brings a remarkable sense of movement and vitality to the compositions, capturing the dynamic energy traditionally associated with the dragon as a symbol of strength, protection, and imperial power.
The pair is particularly notable for its contrasting enamel grounds, creating a visually compelling dialogue between the two works. One vase is executed on a deep, saturated green ground, providing a rich and dramatic backdrop for the dragon. The companion vase features a luminous green aventurine (goldstone) ground, its subtly shimmering surface adding depth and brilliance, enhancing the illusion of movement as light interacts across the enamel.
The shoulders are finely finished with geometric borders and tightly controlled cloisonné wire patterns, demonstrating the disciplined craftsmanship and technical sophistication characteristic of the finest Meiji period production.
Works attributed to Honda Yasaburo occupy an important place within the Golden Age of Japanese cloisonné, reflecting a period when enamel artists pushed the medium to exceptional levels of refinement and artistic expression.
Offered as a true pair, these vases present a bold and commanding presence—uniting technical excellence with strong decorative impact. Their scale, subject matter, and contrasting surfaces make them ideally suited for a distinguished collection or a refined interior of significance.
