"Psyche Imploring Cupid," Unique Art Deco Vase.
-
Description
A fine and remarkable example of Art Deco sculpture, this vase is adorned on two sides with scenes from the mythological stories of Psyche and Cupid, carved into the clay not molded by Danish master Jens Jakob Bregnoe. The artist is best known for a series of sculptures commissioned by the porcelain company established by Danish sculptor Jens Peter Dahl-Jensen, all Art Deco groups inspired by Classical antiquity finished in a milky-white glaze. This unique piece depicts Psyche pursuing Cupid, after he flees from her and Venus commands her to undertake several difficult tasks to reunite the couple. The bas relief sculpture here is beautifully executed, and the nudes are very lovely.
