Description
Pair of Figural Dragon Andirons In the Manner of Samuel Yellin 1930c.
A striking pair of figural firedogs (andirons), executed in wrought iron and designed in the expressive spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement. Each andiron is surmounted by a stylized dragon or serpent head terminal, featuring a bared jaw and deeply carved features that convey a bold, mythic presence. The elongated neck is accentuated by a pronounced rope-twist detail, flowing seamlessly into the horizontal log support.
The sculptural composition is anchored by arched frontal legs terminating in stepped block feet, providing architectural strength and visual balance. A dark, naturally aged patina enhances the hand-worked surface and subtle hammer marks, underscoring the craftsmanship associated with early 20th-century decorative ironwork.
Dimensions: 12 h × 32 w × 11½ d in.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate oxidation and surface wear consistent with period
Design Significance
The dramatic zoomorphic terminals and rope-twist neck motif reflect the medieval-inspired vocabulary popularized by Samuel Yellin, the preeminent American master blacksmith who elevated functional ironwork into high decorative art. While not definitively attributed, the sculptural character and technical execution align closely with works produced in his manner during the early 20th century.
An exceptional pair suitable for a period fireplace setting or as sculptural decorative accents in a Gothic, Tudor, or Arts & Crafts interior. -
