Shotputter Bronze by Louis Delapchier (France, 1878-1959).

$ 9,500
  • Description
    The only example we have ever seen, this large (33 inch high) bronze sculpture of a superbly-conditioned athlete about to put the shot was made by Louis Marie Jules Delapchier in the early 20th century. Unlike discus throwing, which goes back to Classical times, the shot put is a relatively recent sport, with roots in the Middle Ages and the first competitions in 19th century, Scotland. Thus, there are few artistic depictions of the sport, and even fewer as superbly executed as this, with the athlete's back and torso beautifully detailed, demonstrating Delapchier's mastery of the human anatomy. The bronze is beautifully cast, chased and patinated, and retains its original marble base.
