Description
A CARVED AND POLYCHROMED WOOD CORPUS CHRISTI
Probably Spain, late 18th or early 19th century
18 1/4" H (height includes stand)
A finely carved and polychromed wooden figure of Christ represented alive upon the Cross, his head gently inclined, eyes open and arms extended in Crucifixion. The body is modeled with careful anatomical detail, the torso subtly twisted and the legs drawn together beneath a deeply carved perizonium.
The figure retains an early painted surface with traces of red polychromy suggesting blood around the head, hands and feet. Fully carved and finished on the reverse, with particular attention to the musculature of the back and the flowing hair. Presented on a later custom enameled iron stand.
Condition: Fine original condition with an early polychromed surface retaining scattered historical touchups, minor wear and age related imperfections.
