Description
A beautiful sculptural set of three bronze candle holders designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Kultakeskus Hämeenlinna in Finland. This set includes three different heights – 13cm, 18cm, and 23cm – while all pieces share the same 14cm diameter. The proportions are very intentional, and typical of Wirkkala’s delicate balance of rhythm, and like in nature, repetition and silent variation. Displayed together, they form a striking architectural group.
The bronze has developed a gorgeous and rich natural patina over the decades, and all three pieces remain in beautiful original condition. They appear to have seen little or no actual use. Each candle holder is stamped on the underside.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) is one of the most internationally recognized Finnish designers and an iconic figure within 20th century design. His career was marked by numerous Triennale awards, gold medals and international honours. He worked across an unusually wide range of materials – from glass, wood and plywood to bronze, silver, and ceramics – always exploring form, tactility, light and the essence of the material itself. These candle holders clearly represent this approach: refined, poetic, and quietly powerful.
A beautiful collector’s set, rare to find in this complete three-size grouping, and perfect both as functional pieces or as sculptural objects of art. -
