Tapio Wirkkala
Finnish, 1915 - 1985
Tapio Wirkkala was a Finnish designer and artist known for his work in a wide range of materials, including glass, ceramics, wood, and silver. He was born in 1915 in Hanko, Finland, and studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki.
Wirkkala's design aesthetic was influenced by his deep connection to nature, and many of his works feature organic forms and textures. He was particularly known for his work in glass, and his designs for Iittala, the Finnish glass company, are some of his most iconic works.
Wirkkala's glass designs often incorporated innovative techniques, such as his "paper bag" vase, which mimicked the texture of a crumpled paper bag using a complex mold and glassblowing process. He also designed glassware with unique surface textures and patterns, and his designs for Iittala's Ultima Thule line, which featured textured surfaces that resembled ice formations, remain popular today.
In addition to his work in glass, Wirkkala also designed jewelry, furniture, and tableware, among other objects. He won numerous awards for his designs, including the prestigious Lunning Prize in 1951, and his works are held in the collections of museums around the world. Wirkkala passed away in 1985, but his legacy as one of Finland's most celebrated designers and artists lives on.
