An almost spherical porcelain jar with slightly flattened base and top, small slender neck, and out-turned mouth, covered in the artist’s characteristic subtly blended hekiyū glazes ranging from deep black to pale blues and greens

Size 10½ x 10½ x 10½ in. (26.7 x 26.5 x 26.5 cm)

The vase comes with its original fitted paulownia-wood tomobako storage box inscribed on top Saiyu tsubo (brilliant-glazed jar) and signed Kutani Yasokichi with seal reading Kutani Yasokichi.

Born in Ishikawa prefecture, Tokuda Yasokichi III was designated a Living National Treasure in 1997, following the lead of his grandfather Tokuda Yasokichi I (1873–1956), who taught him traditional methods of Kutani glaze preparation and decoration. After 1973 Tokuda Yasokichi III invented a technique that enabled him to control the suffusion of Kutani color glazes, creating a starburst effect.
