Description
Very Large Ancient Prehistoric Ammonite Fossil Specimen
Offered for sale is an ammonite fossil, a type of extinct, shelled cephalopod related to modern squid and octopuses. These creatures lived in oceans worldwide from approximately 450 million years ago until they went extinct alongside the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. During fossilization, the previously hollow chambers of the shell were often filled with minerals, such as agate or calcite, which can be seen in the contrasting light and dark sections of the shell. In Ancient Greece, these fossils were thought to possess the power of Zeus, and in other cultures, they were nicknamed "snakestones" because it was believed they were coiled snakes turned to stone. -
