Zaalberg Holland, glazed stoneware vase, 1950s
-
Description
Herman Zaalberg founded his own ceramic workshop in 1918 in Leiderdoorp, Holland, starting the production of ceramic objects in the distinct Jugend style. Control of the company subsequently passed to Herman's sons, who expanded the laboratories and the furnace following a fire. Production became more complex and open to oriental influences (linear shapes and enamel decorations with a few basic colors were typical of Japanese ceramics). The advent of the third generation marked a fundamental transition towards a more contemporary style characterized by graphic decorations typical of the 1950s. The vase proposed here dates back to this period: it is a small circular vase in dark brown terracotta, decorated with a non-regular geometric pattern and only partially glazed in strong contrasting colours.
The vase is marked Zaalberg Holland on the base. -
