Description
A massive piece of textile art, quite rare and absolutely stunning. The robe was collected in Southern China GuiZhou Provence from a branch of Miao tribe that resides on a high elevation. Likely dated to turn of the 20th century and has been preserved remarkably. The robe of this kind is unusual in the sense that they were not made for everyday use but most likely reserved for ceremonial occasion. Although located in Southern China, the high elevation can have cold climate therefore the robes were made with heavy wool and cotton padding with intricate top stitches of the black and red patterns including diamonds, crosses, chevron and rhombus . What's interesting of this piece is that it has an striking resemblance to certain Navajo weaving in terms of the pattern, color and overall presence.
