Description
Flat-weave carpet runner, Slovakia or Hungary, early-mid 20th century
Hand-woven cotton, possibly linen and hemp.
27 in. wide
97 in. (8 ft. 1 in.) long
We’re pleased to offer a selection of finely woven rag rugs from the early to mid-twentieth century. They were handwoven in Slovakia or Hungary. Until 1918 the borders between the two countries were fluid, and the craft traditions in Southeast Slovakia and Northeast Hungary are nearly indistinguishable.
Clearly executed by skilled weavers, each rug presents a deceptively simple pattern in a thoughtful color palette. The quality of the fibers and weaving ensure they are highly durable. Intended as floor and table coverings, they are particularly well-suited for use as stair runners. All rugs are in excellent condition and have been recently laundered and with natural hemp bindings applied at hems. All are approximately 27 in. wide. Various lengths of each pattern are available, with totals ranging from 8 to 52 feet. -
