TISCA “Sophie” Hand-Tufted Wool Rug, France, 1990s

A distinctive vintage TISCA “Sophie” rug, hand-tufted in France in the 1990s from 100% New Zealand wool.

The rug features a rich deep-blue ground animated by a playful, almost painterly composition of abstract botanical and organic motifs. Elongated grass- and leaf-like forms rise from the lower part of the design in shades of green and off-white, while scattered pink, cream and pale green organic shapes appear across the upper field. Their deliberately irregular, hand-drawn quality gives the composition an expressive and artistic character.

The contrast between the saturated blue background and the softer pastel tones creates a design that is both visually striking and remarkably harmonious. With its generous proportions and strong graphic presence, the rug works beautifully as a statement piece while remaining easy to integrate into modern, postmodern, eclectic and contemporary interiors.

The history of TISCA's French production dates back to 1958, when Swiss textile company TISCA TIARA established a specialist handmade carpet workshop in Moroges, Burgundy. From the 1970s onward, the French workshop also developed hand-tufted carpet production and became known for its combination of skilled craftsmanship and distinctive textile design.

Made from 100% New Zealand wool, the rug has a dense, soft surface with excellent depth of colour, while the hand-tufted construction beautifully defines the organic shapes of the design.

The rug retains its original TISCA manufacturer's label on the reverse, marked “fait main – hand made in France.” The label identifies the Sophie model, Dormiane colourway and its original dimensions of 170 × 240 cm.
