Description
Beautiful 17th Century Bartmann Jug / Bellarmine Jug German Salt Glazed Stoneware
This is a very fine and early example of a renowned ‘bartmann’ / ‘baardman’ of ‘Bellarmine’ jug - made in Germany in the first half of the 17th century.
Dating back to early 17th century, this piece of European salt glazed stoneware is around 400 years old. Most probably this jug was made round Cologne or Frechen.
The jug is adorned with beautiful and very detailed stamped decoration - of course the bearded man near the top and a wonderful floral decoration on the belly of the jug. Both very elegantly executed and colorful. These cobalt blue tones wonderfully combine with the speckled brown / yellow color of the salt glazed ‘engobe’ layer which is (partly) covering the grey earthenware.
Comes in a very good condition with a chip on the top rim - as can be seen in the photos.
