Description
An antique Korean ceramic tea bowl with celadon glaze from Goryeo dynasty, circa 12th century. The thin-walled stoneware bowl was potted delicately with a subtle irregularity in shape. Of an elegant conical form. the bowl rises on a small ring base and has always no flat bottom in its interior. The interior has a overall discernible design carved in low relief under the glaze, part of which is more clear and appears to be chrysanthemum flower among scrolling patter, although the impression overall is rather shallow and a little hard to see. Both the interior and the exterior were covered in a luminous celadon glaze that showcases fine surface crackles. Minimalistic in form and decoration, this bowl was used to serve tea which would have reflected the color of the tea beautifully. There are some three kiln spur marks on the base ring due to stacked firing. A lovely example of the work from Goryeo period.
The celadon ceramic from Goryeo dynasty has been cherished by collectors for their elegant form and sumptuous jade-color glaze, a result of cultural exchange and influence from Chinese Song ceramic. -
