    Chinese Export charger from the Verplanck service, painted in the Meissen style with bouquets of flowers and flower sprays.

    Samuel Verplanck (1739-1820) was born in New York city and became a wealthy merchant and politician. He lived at 3 Wall Street from 1763-1803.
    The Verplanck Room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Gallery 718) displays furniture, paintings- including his portrait painted by John Singleton Copley- and objects that belonged to Verplanck. Chinese export from this service is displayed in a corner cabinet, including a pair of identical chargers on the bottom shelf.
