Description
This hand-hammered copper bowl reflects the disciplined material expression characteristic of traditional metalwork in the Yucatán Peninsula. Produced by artisans of Ensamble Artesano for Taller Maya, the piece emphasizes surface articulation and structural clarity over ornament.
Formed from a single sheet of copper, the bowl is defined by a wide, gently flared rim and a rounded, tapering body that settles into a stable, low profile. The exterior retains the rhythmic marks of the hammer, creating a subtle modulation of light across the surface. These intentional impressions are not decorative additions but evidence of process, revealing the manual labor embedded in the object’s formation. The warm tonal variations—ranging from deep amber to burnished copper—underscore the integrity of the metal and its natural patination.
The interior remains smooth and concave, reinforcing its functional capacity while maintaining sculptural presence when unadorned. Both utilitarian and contemplative, the bowl articulates a balance between weight and refinement.
As part of Taller Maya’s collaborative initiative supporting over 160 artisans in the region, the work stands as a continuation of generational craft traditions translated into a restrained, contemporary vocabulary. A measured example of hand-forged metalwork, it embodies material honesty, disciplined form, and cultural continuity. -
