Set of Eight MT 552 Dining Chairs by Geraldo de Barros - Lot 622-806A

$ 36,000
  • Description

    A disciplined study in proportion, material intelligence, and early Brazilian Modern ideology, this rare set of eight “MT 552” dining chairs was designed by Geraldo de Barros and produced by Unilabor in the 1950s.
    Executed in solid rosewood with hand-woven cane seats and backrests, the model exemplifies the rationalist clarity that defined Unilabor’s progressive design philosophy. The slender yet structurally confident frames demonstrate de Barros’ sensitivity to line and negative space, while the woven cane introduces visual lightness and textural warmth—allowing the chairs to feel architectural without heaviness.
    Unlike many surviving examples, this set retains strong structural integrity. The frames have been professionally reinforced and refinished to reveal the depth and tonal movement of the rosewood grain. The caning has been newly executed, meticulously following the original 1950s pattern and tension, preserving historical accuracy while ensuring longevity.
    Unilabor holds a singular place in Brazilian design history as one of the country’s earliest modern furniture collectives. Works from this period represent not only aesthetic refinement but a pivotal moment in the evolution of Brazilian modernist production. The “MT 552” model remains among the most recognizable and sought-after dining forms from the atelier.
    Offered as a complete set of eight chairs (six currently shown, with two under restoration), this grouping presents a significant opportunity for collectors seeking a cohesive and historically grounded dining ensemble. Their refined silhouette allows them to integrate effortlessly into both strictly modernist interiors and more eclectic, contemporary settings.
    Documented in period and contemporary publications, including Unilabor by Mauro Claro (Senac SP, 2004).
    An exceptional acquisition for collectors of Brazilian Modern furniture, Geraldo de Barros scholarship, and museum-caliber Unilabor production.
