Description
GILT BRONZE MIRRORED SURTOUT DE TABLE
In the Louis XV taste
Paris, circa 1880
23 1/4" W x 13 1/4" D x 2 1/4" H
A fluid ovular form that is brilliantly organic and natural, the essence of Rococo design is captured in the ever-flowing acanthus, undulating cyma-curved reeding moving asymmetrically around the plateau, the pierced rocaille apron and finely chased lobed shell on either end. It rests on opposing c-scrolled legs of acanthus. An exquisite table centerpiece.
Designed to support a mirrored plateau, surtouts de table served as both functional and decorative centerpieces in formal dining settings, reflecting candlelight and table arrangements while organizing vessels, candelabra or other tabletop elements.
Condition: Minor wear and scuffing to the mirror. Extensive oxidization and verdigris in crevices throughout. Light wear to ormolu.
