Description
Gertrud and Otto Natzler Crater-Glazed Bowl, 1950c.
Earthenware with iron crater glaze
5.5 in. diameter × 2 in. height
Signed to underside ‘Natzler’
Description:
An early and compelling example of Gertrud and Otto Natzler’s crater glaze exploration, this 1950's bowl presents a richly textured surface defined by deep, pitted formations and subtle tonal variation within the iron glaze. The volcanic character of the glaze—achieved through controlled reduction firing—creates a tactile landscape that is both visually dynamic and emblematic of the duo’s technical innovation during this period.
The form is restrained and balanced, allowing the dramatic surface to take precedence, a hallmark of the Natzlers’ collaborative approach in their early Los Angeles years.
Condition:
Very good vintage condition. Surface displays characteristic crater formations inherent to the firing process. -
