Description
This antique Japanese wooden usu mortar dates from the early 20th century and was traditionally used in the preparation of mochi during ceremonial and seasonal gatherings. Hand-carved from a single block of wood, the piece reflects the quiet strength and functional beauty characteristic of vernacular Japanese craftsmanship. Its robust silhouette, faceted sides, and deeply weathered surface give the object a distinctly sculptural quality, enhanced further by the rich dark patina acquired through decades of use.
Originally conceived as a utilitarian vessel, the mortar now functions beautifully as a decorative object within contemporary interiors, where its raw materiality and organic form resonate strongly with wabi-sabi aesthetics. The piece can equally serve as a sculptural plinth, planter, or standalone architectural accent, while preserving the authentic presence of its original purpose. -
