Description
This rare pewter bowl, designed by Hugo Gehlin and produced by Ystad Tenn in Sweden in 1929, features an elegant flared form with smooth, curved lines, resting on a subtly tiered pedestal base. The bowl’s refined proportions and restrained detailing highlight Gehlin’s mastery of early 20th-century Swedish craftsmanship.
Hugo Gehlin (1889–1953) was a distinguished Swedish designer and sculptor known for his contributions to decorative arts, particularly in pewter. His work skillfully blends traditional Swedish craftsmanship with modernist influences, resulting in pieces that balance functionality with artistic expression. Ystad Tenn, a leading Swedish pewter manufacturer, was renowned for producing high-quality Art Deco and early modernist designs, frequently collaborating with prominent designers like Gehlin.
This bowl embodies the transitional phase in Scandinavian design, bridging the decorative elegance of the 1920s with the emerging functional modernism that characterized subsequent decades.
The bowl measures 29 centimeters in diameter and 14.5 centimeters in height (11.4 x 5.7 inches), presenting a graceful and substantial presence.
