Description
Jean Després Modernist Hammered Silver-Plated Bowl, France, circa 1930s
This exceptional and rare silver-plated bowl is an outstanding example of the refined Modernist vision of Jean Després (1889–1980), the celebrated French silversmith known for his bold geometric forms and hammered metalwork. Likely dating from the 1930s, this large-scale bowl features Després’ signature hand-hammered finish across its broad, hemispherical form. It sits atop a cylindrical pedestal base with a squared plinth, dramatically accented by beaded silver elements at the junctions—one of Després’ most iconic decorative motifs.
The bowl is signed J. Després on the underside and exemplifies the artist’s sculptural approach to functional design, drawing from both the Cubist and Machine Age influences that defined French Modernism between the wars. The work is silver-plated over metal and retains its original luster and weight, making it both a collector’s treasure and a commanding decorative object for display
Far from his earlier hammered finishes, this piece showcases a smooth, high-gloss surface that reflects light and space with striking clarity, adding to its visual impact and modernist purity. Both signed and stamped marks found on the underside of this bowl is possibly a one-of-a-kind piece, making it an exceptional example of Després’ more mature style.
A key figure in the Art Deco and French Modernist movements, Jean Després was celebrated for his avant-garde jewelry, cocktail shakers, silver boxes, and decorative objects. His work was embraced by artists, intellectuals, and tastemakers of the time—from Paul Signac and Anatole France to Andy Warhol in the later 20th century.
This bowl stands out as a commanding and sculptural object, blending elegance with industrial rigor. Ideal for collectors of French silver-plate, 20th-century design, or those looking for a truly iconic work of decorative art. - More Information
