Description
Karl Palda Art Deco Decanter and Glasses, Czechoslovakia, 1920s
This exquisite Art Deco decanter set, designed by Karl Palda in Czechoslovakia during the 1920s, captures the essence of the movement’s fascination with geometry, modernity, and luxury. Crafted from high-quality cut crystal, the sharply faceted form of the decanter and glasses reflects light in dazzling prisms, a hallmark of Palda’s glassworks. The surface design features striking black and opaque enamel inlays arranged in precise geometric motifs—half-moon arcs and inverted chevrons—against the clear crystal body. These bold contrasts of light and dark embody the sleek sophistication that defined the Art Deco aesthetic emerging between the wars.
Karl Palda, one of the most celebrated Bohemian glass designers, established his workshop in Haida (Nový Bor), the glassmaking center of Czechoslovakia, where he became known for combining machine-age angular forms with artistic hand-enamel decoration. His designs were widely exported throughout Europe and beyond, symbolizing a new modern lifestyle of elegance and refinement. The matching six liqueur glasses mirror the decanter’s angular profile, with their black enamel V-shaped motifs accentuating the architectural quality of each piece. Together, the set exemplifies the meticulous craftsmanship and stylistic innovation that placed Bohemian glass at the forefront of international Art Deco design. - More Information
