Description
A large heraldic brass repoussé charger featuring a coat of arms crowned with a knight’s helmet. The shield includes four shells in a cross configuration and patterned quadrants in each corner. The rim is bordered with decorations of repeating rosettes and concentric rope twists. English, circa 1860.
Diameter: 22 in. (56 cm)
Depth: 2 in. (5 cm)
Analysis of Heraldic Elements
Knight’s Helmet: Symbolizes chivalry, knightly virtues, nobility, and military service.
Shield: Divided into a cross configuration with four shells, often symbolizing pilgrimage or voyages. The exact blazon isn’t fully clear. The cross can represent faith, service, and the four cardinal directions. The shells, which, again, symbolize pilgrimage or travel, possibly hint at a family history of military or exploratory endeavors, while the checkerboard pattern may symbolize strategic planning or land ownership.
Acanthus Scrolls are a decorative element often found in classical art and represent enduring life.
These elements would be associated with particular families, institutions, or regions in heraldry. -
