Description
This highly sought after hand made silver plated pitcher has become a classic among collectors of fine Mexican modernist holloware. It is an impessive and playful sculpture of a toucan with large azurite eyes and a chunky mosaic azurite handle. Los Castillo was formed in 1939 by the Castillo brothers in Taxco, Mexico. All of the Castillo brothers received their silver training in the workshop of William Spratling before they branched out on their own. They grew to become one of the largest silver workshops in Taxco with showrooms in Acapulco, Taxco, Mexico City and even the Mexico City Airport. Never content to follow the status quo, they experimented with many new silver techniques such as mosaic stone and shell inlay, married metals, feather inlay, enamel and blued steel. Antonio Castillo was the head of their workshop but he credited his youngest brother, Chato with being the driving creative force.
