Description
Antique gilt and patinated bronze cherub centrepiece by Moreau
French, 19th Century
Height 38cm, width 50cm, depth 27cm
This exceptional Louis XVI style centrepiece is the creation of esteemed French sculptor Mathurin Moreau (1822–1912), known for his pieces in the academic style. Hailing from a lineage of accomplished sculptors, Moreau gained widespread recognition for his artistry and was honoured with a prestigious medal of honour in 1879.
Elegantly positioned on an ornate gilt-bronze base with rounded feet, the piece is adorned with elaborate floral garlands, each side distinguished by a central laurel wreath. Above this exquisite foundation, two cherubs recline in opposite directions, their figures gracefully draped in flowing fabric. One leans pensively on his arm, resting his chin in thought, while the other turns slightly toward his companion. Their finely sculpted wings provide structural support for the ornate bowl resting atop the composition.
The bowl itself, crafted with intricate openwork and finished in rich gilding, features an elegant lattice motif. Its contoured edges form practical yet decorative handles, while a circular gilded mount at the centre adds to its sophisticated aesthetic.
Signed ‘Math. Moreau’, the superb quality of the antique makes it a distinguished and timeless addition to any refined interior.
