Description
Large Rococo style porcelain chandelier by Meissen
German, late 19th Century
Height 118cm, diameter 97cm
This magnificent chandelier is an exceptional example of the Rococo style by the leading porcelain producer Meissen. The chandelier features two tiers of lights, numbering 36 in total. The chandelier features a shaped baluster-form stem, which is pierced with latticework, painted in typical Rococo tones, and adorned with encrusted flowers and figures of semi-nude women playing instruments. The lower tier of lights springs from a series of scrolled porcelain branches, each branch supporting three candleholders, and each profusely adorned with encrusted porcelain flowers and perched birds. The upper tier is similar in form and decoration. The porcelain is marked for Meissen beneath one of the female figures.
