Description
Very large antique English bronze sculpture of Louis XIV by Elkington & Co
English, 19th Century
Sculpture: Height 108cm, width 86cm, depth 43cm
Base: Height 26cm, width 92cm, depth 51.5cm
Overall: 134cm, width 92cm, depth 51.5cm
This magnificent 19th century English equestrian sculpture portrays the French monarch Louis XIV and was produced by the distinguished Birmingham firm, Elkington & Co., celebrated for their fine metalwork.
Inspired by the celebrated design of François Girardon (1628–1715), one of the foremost sculptors of Louis XIV’s reign, this piece carries a rich artistic lineage. Girardon’s monumental statue, originally cast by J. Balthasar Keller (1638–1702), stood proudly in the Place Louis-le-Grand (now the Place Vendôme) from its unveiling in 1699 until the Revolution of 1792, when it was destroyed. Surviving fragments of that original work are today preserved in the Louvre Museum.
The casting quality of this reproduction is exceptional, with remarkable precision visible throughout. The musculature of the horse and the intricate folds of the King’s garments are rendered with striking realism, while the dignified upright posture of Louis XIV conveys both authority and elegance. His attire, completed with a sword at his side, further enhances the sense of majesty.
The horse stands on a rectangular bronze base, finished with a rich patina. A scrolling cartouche featuring the head of Medusa adorns the front, adding a dramatic touch. The base carries the signature ‘Elkington & Co / Founders’.
Beneath, the sculpture is mounted on a stepped marble plinth, beautifully veined and complemented with gilt-bronze mounts, lending both stability and grandeur.
This outstanding sculpture offers collectors and enthusiasts a chance to own a piece that not only celebrates one of France’s most illustrious kings but also exemplifies the finest English bronze casting of the 19th century.
