Description
Large antique silver centrepiece with mythological scenes by Émile Sanner
French, Late 19th Century
Height 40cm, width 80cm, depth 35cm
An outstanding example of 19th century French silverwork, this magnificent centrepiece was crafted by the celebrated silversmith Émile Sanner, whose reputation was built on creating exquisite pieces that balanced decorative artistry with practical elegance.
Cast entirely in silver, the centrepiece is a tribute to classical mythology, adorned with elaborate scenes inspired by the legends of Triton and Amphitrite. According to Greek myth, Triton - often depicted as a merman - is a sea god and son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, who herself is a sea goddess and Poseidon’s consort. In this piece, the pair appear sculpturally along the shaped sides, serving as decorative handles. Amphitrite is shown holding a shell horn, reinforcing her identity and link to the ocean.
Surrounding these mythological figures is an abundance of intricately cast scrollwork that flows into two central panels at the front and back. These panels, executed in bold high relief, narrate scenes from the lives of the sea deities, rich in marine iconography. At the centre of each panel, a dramatic mask of Poseidon dominates the composition, flanked below by crossed tridents and classical symbols of the sea. Twin mermaid tails and a scallop shell complete the scene, unifying the decorative theme.
The upper rim is adorned with a refined ribbon and foliage motif, while the lower section is enhanced with traditional gadrooning. Four lion paw feet support the structure, symbolising both strength and regal presence.
A fitted silvered metal liner sits within the piece, offering functionality alongside its ornamental appeal. The base is stamped with the maker’s mark: ‘MÉRITE FABT / E. SANNER S […]CCR / 3. RUE DU 4 SEPTEMBRE / PARIS’, accompanied by additional French silver hallmarks authenticating its origin and material quality.
Striking in both scale and design, this antique centrepiece is ideal for displaying fresh fruit, flowers, or standing alone as a statement of classical luxury in any finely appointed setting.
The silver weighs approximately 13,700 grams.
