Pair of Chinese Export Armorial Platters, c.
-
Description
Pair of Chinese Export porcelain armorial platters, each decorated with the arms of Riddell, the central bouquet of flowers painted in puce within a chain border to the cavetto and flower festoons to the outer border.
See: David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain Volume II, p.445.
Howard notes the Riddell crest, actually a greyhound, is incorrectly depicted as a stag, that the antlers should be ears and the hooves should be paws. He speculates the pattern sent to China was too small, possibly a wax seal, and misinterpreted by the Chinese painters. The motto is correct. -
