Persian engraved glass and silver part-drinks service
Persian, 20th Century
Tray: Height 2cm, width 43.5cm, depth 29.5cm
Cups: Height 8cm, width 7.5cm, depth 5cm
Showcasing sensational engraving of Persian design, this glassware set is comprised of a large oval tray, a twin-handled sugar bowl, ten engraved glasses with silver mounts, and ten coffee spoons, making the service twenty-two pieces in total.
All items sport highly intricate engraved design that speaks to the skill of the maker. Each piece of silver is filled with flowing foliate and mandala-esque patterning, creating a unity of design between the pieces. Contrasts between dense and spare shading create an impressive sense of depth and texture. Alongside the detailing on the silver, the glass cups are engraved with leaf designs. The angular handles of the cups and sugar bowl expertly contrast the flowing floral designs and are an unusual design feature.
The pieces are variously stamped on the underside and handles: the mark ‘84’, the letter ‘A’ ensconced in a shield cartouche, and an unknown Persian workshop hallmark feature on the set.
Boasting highly ornate detailing, this superb set would be an excellent piece to add to one’s antique collection. -
