Description
One of the most astonishing early Art Deco silver pieces we have seen, this large silver and enamel lidded compote was smithed in 1922 by Pierre Carrel. The French were among the first to design stylized Classical pieces that later became known as Art Deco, and this piece is a very fine example of this early phase in the style. Carrel is known as one of the greatest students of Jean Dunand, the master of dinanderie or mixed metalwork, and his pieces in copper or silver are very rare. This piece shows Carrel's mastery of hammered silver and champlevé enamelwork, the latter in an ivory hue that contrasts subtly with the glow of the silver. The pinnacle at the peak of the compote's lid is an especially fine touch.
