Description
White Glazed Ceramic Pitcher, Model “Bourgogne”, by Poterie Pol Chambost (23 cm / 9 in), Traditional Burgundian Jug Form (France, c. 1950 to 1960) - Perfect Condition
Introduction
At Maisons Rares (an IdeelArt brand), every piece is personally curated: beautiful historical objects from famous French designers and manufacturers, and art from the world over.
This pure white ceramic pitcher carries the mark of one of the great names of French Mid-Century ceramics, the Poterie Pol Chambost. A refined, all-white interpretation of the traditional Burgundian jug, it pairs a famous ceramic pedigree with the timeless, understated elegance that suits today's quiet luxury and minimalist interiors.
History & Craftsmanship: Poterie Pol Chambost
Pol Chambost (1906 to 1983) was one of the most celebrated French ceramists of the twentieth century. A sculptor by training, he turned to clay from the late 1930s and, from his Paris studio, built a body of work admired for its sculptural forms and its subtle harmonies of matte and glossy glazes. He exhibited at the Salon des Arts Menagers, and his pieces are held and collected internationally today.
Alongside his celebrated art pieces, the Poterie Pol Chambost produced refined editioned models for the table, marked beneath the base with the pottery's name. The present pitcher is the “Bourgogne” model, an elegant, all-white reading of the classic Burgundian jug. It represents the quieter, more architectural side of the Chambost output, prized for its purity of form rather than for bold color.
Design & Aesthetics: Architectural Purity in White
The pitcher takes a generous baluster form, a full ovoid body drawn up through a waisted neck to a flared collar and a neat pinched pouring spout, balanced by a high, confidently arched loop handle. Crisp horizontal bands ring the body and neck, lending the piece a quiet, almost architectural rhythm, and it rests on a stepped, splayed foot.
The entire vessel is finished in a flawless glossy white glaze, uninterrupted by any decoration. This monochrome restraint is precisely its strength: it reads as calm, timeless, and quietly luxurious, at home in a classic, a country, or a resolutely modern interior. The form does all the talking.
Condition & Authenticity
This piece is in perfect, pristine condition, free from any chips, cracks, hairlines, crazing, marks, or scratches. The white glaze is flawless and glossy throughout, and the piece presents as immaculate.
It is clearly marked beneath the base with an incised handwritten signature, “Bourgogne, Poterie Pol Chambost, France”.
Like all pieces from our collection, this item comes with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Maisons Rares.
Design Context
A pure white piece of this quality is endlessly versatile. We recommend displaying it on a console, a mantel, an open shelf, or a dining table, where its sculptural silhouette can stand out against wood, stone, or a colored wall. Show it empty to celebrate its form, or use it as a vase for white blooms, green foliage, or dried branches. Its all-white finish lets it sit comfortably in virtually any palette or period of interior.
