This pair of sauce boats and stands belongs to the Flora Danica service, one of Royal Copenhagen's long-running patterns, originally commissioned in the late 18th century and inspired by the Danish botanical encyclopaedia of the same name, a catalogue documenting the plant life of the Danish kingdom.
Each sauce boat is potted in white porcelain and painted with a botanical specimen, raised on a foot above a fixed oval stand. The rims and stands carry bands of gilt panels with pink grounds and gilt beading, below a moulded gilt border, while the branch-form handles are modelled in naturalistic tones and applied with flowers at their lower junction. The stands are edged with gilt gadrooning.
The underside of each bears the Royal Copenhagen mark, the three-wave mark, the shape number 3556, and the Latin name of the plant depicted, painted in script — Orobus tuberosus L. and Hieracium umbellatum β. filifolium Fr. — reflecting the botanical basis of the service.
