Two large Danish ‘Flora Danica’ hand-painted floral oval platters by Royal Copenhagen
Danish, 20th Century
Height 5cm, width 51cm, depth 37cm
These exceptional oval platters are part of the celebrated Flora Danica porcelain series, produced by the prestigious Royal Copenhagen manufactory in Denmark. Crafted in the 20th century, they continue the legacy of a collection that originated in the late 18th century - an extraordinary combination of artistic brilliance and diplomatic significance.
The Flora Danica service was commissioned in 1790 by King Christian VII as a gesture of goodwill during the conflict between Russia and Sweden in 1788–89, when Denmark, allied with Russia, did not provide the anticipated support. Inspired by the intricate botanical illustrations first published in the Flora Danica botanical booklets in 1752, the bespoke dinner service was intended for Empress Catherine II, who, sadly, passed away before its completion in 1802. Of the original masterpieces, around 1,500 pieces survive today, many of which are on display at iconic Danish landmarks, including Rosenborg Castle, Christiansborg Palace, and Amalienborg Palace.
The platters themselves are exquisitely detailed. Their edges feature refined gilt decoration, while the panelled borders are highlighted by gilt bosses from which graceful pairs of leaves hang, all framed by rectangular panels. The gilt dentil rims elegantly frame the central motifs, which showcase meticulously hand-painted illustrations of botanical specimens.
On the underside, each platter carries the hallmark blue wave and green printed factory mark of Royal Copenhagen, accompanied by inventory numbers. The Latin names of the depicted plants are also included: Aesculus hippocastanum (European horse-chestnut) and Orchis purpureus Huds (lady orchid).
With their exceptional craftsmanship and botanical artistry, these platters represent a sophisticated and highly collectible addition for connoisseurs of fine porcelain.
