Description
These are beautiful examples of Japanese ceramic Chawanmushi cups — very elegant and classic in design.
We have acquired a beautiful set of Japanese ceramic Chawanmushi cups that are truly elegant and classic in design. Originally used for custards, these versatile dishes are also perfect for serving small appetizers, soups, side dishes or would be as charming decorative pieces.
The cups feature a captivating blend of traditional Japanese decoration styles. The pattern appears to be Sometsuke-style (blue and white) combined with Akae-style, showcasing delicate red lines and gilded details. The vertical black and gold lines add a crisp, modern feel to the set. This design is reminiscent of mid-20th century pieces, yet it remains a popular motif in contemporary Chawanmushi sets. The precise and crisp decoration suggests post-war production.
These pieces are attributed to Kutani (Ishikawa), a region renowned for its bold colors and intricate gold detailing, and they also exhibit Arita-style details.
The set is in good vintage condition with some slight wear appropriate for its age. - More Information
