Chase Comet and Coronet Coffee and Tea Set
The Chase Comet Coffee Set, introduced in 1932, exemplifies streamlined modernism with its elegant etched lines and functional design. The Comet Tea Kettle was available in both electric and standard versions. While maintaining the same etched detailing along its lower body, the tea kettle lacked the flared base on the coffee pot. Instead of a side handle, it featured a gracefully arched white plastic handle extending over the top, ensuring ease of use. Great bakelite tray, in excellent condition. I think the original owner took very good care of this set and hardly used it since it was acquired directly from their estate. Designed my Walter Von Nessen.

The Chase Coronet Coffee Urn, paired with the Kent Sugar and Creamer, was a statement piece designed for large gatherings. Whether for formal meals, buffet parties, or club meetings, this urn efficiently brewed and served up to 18 cups of coffee. Once the percolating basket was removed, the urn could accommodate an additional 7 cups, serving a total of 25 guests. Featuring a well-type heating unit, it provided "high heat" for brewing and "low heat" for keeping coffee piping hot. A simple switch allowed effortless temperature adjustment, ensuring coffee remained ready to serve at any moment.

As noted in the 1942 Chase Catalog, elements of Von Nessen’s design for the Coronet Coffee Urn appear to be influenced by Eliel Saarinen’s 1934 Tea Urn. Both shared a spherical container with side handles, yet Von Nessen refined his approach for mass production. He replaced traditional silver plating with non-tarnishing chrome and opted for a solid fluted base, reminiscent of the **Diplomat Coffee Set**, rather than a vented one. Unlike earlier urns that relied on an open-flame alcohol burner, the Coronet Coffee Urn incorporated an electric heating unit, reflecting the modern conveniences of the era.

These sets certainly brightened many a breakfast, tea time, or dinner party during the dark days of the Depression. And today, they add a striking touch to a present-day Art Deco style kitchen or dining room, seamlessly blending vintage elegance with modern sophistication.
